Reverend Shohaku Okumura was born in Osaka, Japan in 1948 and ordained as a Zen Priest by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi in 1970. He followed Danin Katagiri Roshi as the head priest at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis. In 1997 he became the director of what is now called the Soto Zen Buddhism International Center in San Francisco, CA although he now lives and practices at Sanshinji in Bloomington, Indiana, a practice center and community that he founded.
